Work the Room
a book about workshop facilitation

This isn’t a book about how to plan and prepare workshops. This isn’t a book of activities to facilitate.

This is a book about what happens after.

After you’ve planned the workshop. After you’ve chosen an activity. After the workshop has started… Read this book to learn how to lead collaboration in the workshop while participants collaborate during the activities.

Here, we put three tools facilitation in your toolbox:

  1. The six types of participants you’ll meet, and how to handle them

  2. Three ways to kickstart participation, and keep it going

  3. Four tricks to tame collaboration, and keep it moving

If you know how to select and sequence activities and who to invite, that’s super useful. If you know how to map journeys or fill in a canvas, that’s also super useful, yet we’ll leave those lessons elsewhere. (I list some workshop planning resources and workshop activity resources here on the website.)

After the workshop has started, after shared instructions for the next activity, this book shares tips, tricks, and tools to lead collaboration during activities and make sure you walk out with what you want from every workshop.
